Why can I only unlock WhatsApp in the app?
Because otherwise the lock would be useless.
If someone steals your SIM or takes over your phone number, they can message us on WhatsApp as you. If they could also _unlock_ the channel from WhatsApp, locking it would protect nobody. Requiring the app — where they would need your password — is what makes the lock mean something.
